Yesterday, several of our Unified students spent the afternoon checking out the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Popcorn and plumbers were the order of the day.

Sixth-grade students kicked off National Poetry Month (April) by learning about a type of "found poetry" called Blackout Poetry. They analyzed samples, formulated a definition, and then brainstormed the steps for creating one. The experience culminated with an event where family, friends, administration, school, and Central Office staff, Board of Education members, community members, and poet laureates Dr. Sandy Yannone and Leah O'Connor joined us to create some poems together. Students became the teachers, and everyone was successful. It was a wonderful event!

This week, our Old Saybrook High School and Grade 8 students had the opportunity to hear from Chris Herren, founder of The Herren Project.
Chris shared his powerful personal journey of how addiction took hold behind the scenes of a successful basketball career, and how recovery gave him a second chance at life. Through an honest, direct message, he spoke about choices, consequences, and the importance of seeking support.
Students described the presentation as “powerful” and said it “gave them a different perspective,” noting that Chris spoke to them like adults: real, respectful, and impactful.
We’re grateful to Chris Herren for helping our students reflect on decision-making, personal responsibility, and making healthy choices. Opportunities like this support student growth both inside and outside the classroom.

Yesturday, our school community came together to honor our veterans in meaningful ways. We hosted a Veterans Day panel where several veterans shared their experiences and lessons of service with our students. Our students also prepared and served breakfast to our guests as a way to show appreciation for their sacrifices.
In addition, our fourth graders joined the fifth grade chorus to perform for the veterans—a touching performance that truly highlighted the spirit of the day. Several of our students also represented our school at the town ceremony on the green, reading their Patriot’s Pen essays and helping with the event.
It was a wonderful day of learning, gratitude, and community. We are proud of our students for showing such respect and appreciation to those who have served.
